I love spending time in Portland. It soothes my soul.
And I adore spending time with my oldest kid. Because even though we can be whiny and needy and human…, 
… she also teaches me important things I need to know like how to take trendy eyeball photos with (I’m so, so sorry about this) my eye-phone. Like this:

Now, Abby and I have been talking a lot lately about the fact that acquiring knowledge is an empty exercise unless we can apply it with the next logical steps to real life situations. And it’s essential, really, that we parents model this type of life-long learning. Don’t you agree?

You agree. Abby *may* agree. I *absolutely* agree! But (in case it slipped your mind) *your* husband – *her* father – was a MATH major, which (by definition) is the acquisition of useless knowledge. Like knowing that algorithms are the banal bromides of a former Vice President regarding climate change.

I love you, Dad, and I know from all the times you read the dictionary to us at the dinner table that you adore the English language. But, dude, you just used the words “banal bromides” to discount math as useful knowledge. Also, something-something about Al Gore. I don’t know what any of that means which makes this conversation nostalgically like the dinner table of my youth.
