I Spy: A Thanksgiving Game (UPDATED With Drawing Winners)

Happy Thanksgiving Eve, friends. And if you’re not from the U.S., Happy Thanksgiving Eve, anyway; I promise to eat extra helpings of all my favorite foods for you over the next few days. It’s part of the international service we like provide here at the 5 Kids blog. You’re welcome.

Late last night, Greg moved our couch to make room for the long Thanksgiving table.

This is what we found:

Yes, we did.

Please note that this pie is in my oven right now, though:

Which makes us All the Things. Both/And, friends; BOTH living in couch filth and squalor AND making rustic chic pies.

When I posted this on Facebook this morning, to share our Happy Schadenfreude moment with you all,

…Shauna Wagner, a friend of this blog, commented that it looks like an I Spy game.

So now that’s what it is.

Welcome to
I Spy: A Thanksgiving Game

I’m going to share 2 pictures of the stunning mess that was under our couch, and you’re invited to identify one thing by making an I Spy comment in the comment section below, like this, “I Spy a pink M&M, left over from last Easter, perhaps?” Or, “I Spy a tiny, brown, wrinkled, petrified Satsuma orange. Since those only come out at Christmas time, I can only guess when that rolled under the couch.”

From any comments that correctly identify something in the Pile of Awesomeness, I will randomly draw 5 winners to receive an original, printed-on-our-only-works-sometimes-printer postcard of something else in our house with a note thanking you for being part of our weird, wonky, wonderful community. The postcard could be pretty. It could be gross. It’s anyone’s guess, really.

Entries for the drawing can be submitted until 10:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 27th, Pacific Standard Time. So, you know, today. Comments, as always, welcome anytime.

OK, then. Ready?

Here we go.

What do you spy?

You know, besides a mama who’s lost her ever-loving mind.

Thanks to all of you who played I Spy. Your answers were AWESOME, and I feel like I’m in very, very good company now. Still laughing at how well you GET IT. I drew winners for the postcards using a random number generator, and I included all of you who entered after the deadline, because I’m a rule-breaker and it gets worse the older I get. Rules Schmules. Here are our 5 drawing winners:

Lori Ricard
Katrina Collins

Send your address to me at FiveKidsIsALotOfKids@gmail.com and I’ll pop those in the mail! They might include a picture of my bathroom mirror which has a note in lipstick from my daughter that reads “Happy Mother’s Day!” Yep – from last May. ‘Cause cleaning bathroom mirrors is a bottom-of-list task around here. With, um, a lot of other tasks.

Happy Thanksgiving!

P.S. It’s OK if you needed to dry-heave a little after seeing those pics. Me, too.

P.P.S. No need to put your address in the comments section. I’ll email winners and you can send me your address privately. Also, this is totally open to international participants. Play on!

ABOUT BETH WOOLSEY I'm a writer. And a mess. And mouthy, brave, and strong. I believe we all belong to each other. I believe in the long way 'round. And I believe, always, in grace in the grime and wonder in the wild of a life lived off course from what was, once, a perfectly good plan.
  1. I spy with my little eye… A popsicle stick and two hot wheels ( yellow And green).

  2. I spy a Nerf dart- but the cool kind that sticks to the walls forever and you forget they are there until someone comes over and points it out. Also a 3 Musketeers wrapper and a Duplo block. Makes me want to have my Greg move our couch and see what treasures await…..then again, maybe not. The pie does look amazing. I am making a chocolate one here. Currently we have 13,435,449 rainbow loom bandy things all over the house. And foamy Thanksgiving stickies with wrappers. I want to vacuum them up so bad. Happy Thanksgiving!

  3. I spy fruit loops sprinkled by Sarah the fairy princess on her night wanderings with your unicorn 😉 xx

  4. I spy a clear plastic spoon … Perhaps from a kids play kitchen?

  5. I spy two matchbox cars – yellow and red.

  6. I spy, with my little eye, a wrapper from a Watermelon Airhead.
Not only do those bits of taffy get stuck in your teeth, the wrappers get stuck under your couch, or under your car seat, or in your purse, or at the bottom of the bag you schlepped to the basketball game filled with snacks and suckers, only to have your DD beg for a “treat”.

  7. I spy a nail clipper, slightly askew;
Froot Loops, a clothespin, a crayon that’s blue.

  8. I spy a marble and a missing pair of scissors, which if that was my house I would be saying “I knew they would end up there if I let you kids have them!” 🙂 At least you don’t have cats helping shoving toy mice and pipe cleaners under your fridge and washer as well! 🙂 Happy Thanksgiving!

  9. I spy a Ninjago card. Kai, the red ninja perhaps? All I know is that there are a shitton of them under my son’s bed. Because I haven’t been brave enough to move it and explore. Though now you’ve thrown down the gauntlet, I might have to do just that.

  10. I spy with my little eye 5 blue things : a blue crayon somewhere in between the range of indigo and violet blue, a blue Duplo block, a scrap of blue paper, a pair of blue handled scissors, AND the head of a blue bug from the game Cooties. Blue is my favorite color so I’m naturally drawn to it. ;P

    1. Oh! Forgot the blue Fruit Loop!

  11. I spy a golf ball. Since I have never heard you mention about people golfing, it is possible that this golf ball rolled in by itself and nestled amongst comfortable bits. Or it wandered in in someone’s pocket after it having been discovered on the side of a road, or on some grass, or in a garage – all sorts of possibilities!

  12. I spy a fork from the great utensil battle of aught eight.

  13. I spy with my little eye some postmarked mail notifying you of your Nobel Prize and/or lottery winnings.

    1. Your postcard is in the mail! Sadly, no lottery notification. 😉

  14. I spy….MY MARBLE!! I knew I lost my marbles somewhere… And now I have ONE more…!! heehee

  15. I spy a nerf gun dart. You can NEVER find those things when you need them.

  16. I spy a postcard with its postmark peeking out. The goldfish, fruit loops and legos could be the same mess from under my couch. Or my purse. I love this game!

  17. I spy a magnifying glass and fruit loops… A science experiment perhaps!

  18. I spy a two of diamonds. Someone was not very happy while playing go fish.

  19. I spy no less than 12 cheerios/fruit loops/apple jacks. My two year old would pick those out and eat them no matter where they were found. 🙂

  20. I spy with my little eye… That rubber suction cup arrow from the bow and arrow set that was only fired once and then disappeared forever!
Btw, we just moved our couch in the family room in perpetration for tomorrow and we found all of our missing spoons! Woo Hoo!

    1. Perpetration? What the heck? Lets try PREPARATION!

  21. I spy a playing card for some game. Probably a game where things won’t work out right because of said missing card. Or can’t be won without it . . .

  22. I spy with my little eye the goldfish left over from shooting their latest commercial in your real, comfortable living room!

    1. I owe you a postcard, Katrina! Send your address to me at FiveKidsIsALotOfKids@gmail.com and I’ll pop it in the mail. xo

  23. I spy a clean floor in the distance 🙂 and a golf ball

  24. I spy one of those damn high bouncer balls. The kind that kids are always making into a contest to see how many times it will bounce between the floor and the ceiling before breaking a light bulb. And it’ll be one of those expensive energy saver bulbs that turned out to have mercury in them, so you have to clear the area while you clean up, wondering to yourself if it’s brain damage from the LAST mercury-containing CFL bulb they broke that causes them to be unable to hear you when you yell “Don’t bounce that high bouncer in here!”.

  25. I spy a green fruit loop! Which makes me want fruit loops…cereal for dinner?
